A key component of program management is the identification and coordination of the interdependencies between projects, products, and other critical strategic efforts within a company. Program managers in many businesses will be responsible for providing strategic advice and direction to project managers as part of their overall responsibilities. They will recognize when there is a dependency between two groups, such as the product team and marketing.  They will assist project management in breaking down this cross-functional endeavor into its parts. This is done so that the project managers may create the exact tasks that they will need to keep track.
